Emballez, c’est pesé ! La série joue sur la logique de l’instant et de l’éphémère. Les journaux publient tous les jours des informations qui sont caduques après quelques heures. Les chalutiers rapportent du poisson frais, qui ne le reste –frais– qu’un court moment. Et, traditionnellement sur les marchés, on emballe les uns dans les autres.
Du poisson frais dans des nouvelles fraîches.
Techniquement, je joue avec la particularité du papier journal : très absorbant, fragile. Je le maroufle sur support blanc et lisse, pour accentuer le contraste entre ces deux types de supports. Mes poissons sont alors tracés et peints à l’aquarelle, dans un jeu entre transparence et opacité. La fragilité du journal impose une rapidité d’exécution qui rejoint la notion d’instantanéité évoquée plus haut. Enfin, je vernis parfois les poissons (mais pas le journal) pour suggérer l’aspect mouillé du poisson frais.

The serie is a riff on the logic of the moment and its ephemerality. What newspapers publish is obsolete in a matter of hours. The freshness of fish brought back by trawlers is equally evanescent. Traditionally, in markets, one is wrapped in the other.

Technically, I’m guided by the distinctive characteristics of newsprint, in particular its absorbency and fragility. I place the newsprint on smooth white paper, to accentuate the contrast between the two types of paper. My fish are drawn and painted in watercolours that dance between opacity and transparency. The fragility of newsprint mandates quick execution, in keeping with the concept of instantaneity previously evoked. Finally, I apply varnish to the fish (though not to its setting), suggesting their glistening wet appearance when fresh.
